Thompson MS Students Aboard the Cassi

Students from Thompson MS enjoy the ride on Cassi, one of our new catamarans

New Boats Provide Smooth Ride

As part of our ongoing MarineLab improvement plan, we have been replacing our older Privateer monohull boats with new twin hull Power Cats.  The catamaran hulls provide a much smoother ride in rough seas, and a more stable platform when at anchor.  We have had one catamaran, the Mahi, inservice for over a year.  Our new catamarans are named the Jumbi II, Cassi, and Gemini.  So far, everyone who's been on one has raved about the comfort!

This winter, we will be gutting and renovating the labs.  Both the Blue Lab and the Glass Lab will receive new flooring, new cabinets, and new countertops and new walls.
The boats and lab remodeling, along with other facility improve- ments, have been made possible through our MRDF boat donation program, headed by Acquisitions Director Rick Pineiro.

Reservations for 2005
We have decided to continue to reservations procedure, initiated last year, for our 2005 programs.  Instead of everyone trying to call on February 1, we will be sending out reservation Request cards to teachers who have brought programs, been on the calendar but cancelled, or were on the waitlist during the last two years.
These cards will be mailed out in January and need to be back in our office before February 10.  Once again, we will ask for three choices of dates.  After February 13, we will start to hand-fill the calendar.  If two or more schools request the same dates and can't be accommodated, we will give priority to the school's seniority with MarineLab. We may have to break multiple ties for certain preferred dates, and will make reservations to accommodate as many schools' first choice dates as possibe. We will schedule everyone who sends in a card, as far as possible, before we open the calendar to new programs after March 15.

The list of schools which will receive Reservations Request cards may be accessed here.  Please check to make sure if you are on the list, and call us before January 1 if you have been inadvertently left out!  Remember, only those schools which have booked, cancelled, or been on the waitlist sometime in the past two years will be sent Reservation Request Cards.  Everyone else will have to wait and call us after March 15.

Support MarineLab While You Shop
MarineLab has enrolled in the Schoolpop program!  Register with schoolpop.com and earn rebates for MarineLab when you shop at such great online stores as Barnes & Noble, JC Penney, Nordstrom, Target, and Office Depot.  In addition, there are other businesses, stores and catalogs that participate as well, such as The Sharper Image, Budget Rent-a-car, Alamo, and dozens more.
MarineLab earns rebates, anywhere from 1.0% to more than 10%, on each purchase made by a registered Schoolpop.com shopper that has designated MarineLab as their recipient organization.  In fact, shoppers can split rebates between multiple organizations as well! These rebates are donations from the participating merchant - there is no extra cost to the shopper!
Shoppers can download and install a "Shopping Buddy" that reminds you about supporting your organization and automatically redirects you to your destination through the Schoolpop site to ensure that your purchases support your chosen organization.  In addition, if you shop through catalogs or at the store itself, if you pay with a credit card registered at schoolpop.com, your organization gets its rebates too!
So visit www. schoolpop.com today and register to start shopping and supporting MarineLab!

Meet the MarineLab Reservations Team

Linda, Ginette, LauraIntroducing the MarineLab Reservations Team!  Instead of one coordinator and one assistant, teachers can talk to any of our three staff members in the Reservations Office.  In addition, we have a new phone system with voice mail, so you can call after hours and leave a detailed message for any of us.  Please remember, though, we will not  take reservations via voice mail or email  - you must actually speak to a living person to make reservations at MarineLab.

Laura Dreaver is the latest addition to our office.  Laura grew up in Cleveland but has lived in several states, including Texas, New Jersey, Michigan, Indiana, Alaska, and overseas in Germany.  She has a degree in computer graphics and several years' experience in the travel business.

Linda Makepeace is a familiar name and face to many of our long-time MarineLab teachers.  Linda took a  LOOOOOONG leave of absence after her daughter Sarah was born, but now that Sarah is nearly 4 and enjoying pre school, we were fortunate enough to get Linda back!

Ginette Hughes still has an active role in the MarineLab reservations office despite her increased responsibilities at the management level of the Foundation.  Ginette has 17 years experience with MarineLab, which gives her a unique view of the "whole" picture and how we've changed over the years.  Ginette's primary duties include processing the reservations request cards and hand-scheduling each program, coordinating custom and SCUBA programs, and creating MarineLab's promotional and marketing plans.

Any of the above people can help you with your MarineLab program.  We have a good combination of MarineLab experience and new enthusiasm, and hope that this reorganization will better serve our teacher leaders!

Art Finds New Educational Tools for YOUR classroom

Art Mitchell, Director of MarineLab and MarineLab's Leave Only Bubbles, is always on the lookout for new and intriguing items to offer science teachers through our catalog.  Among his most recent finds is "Sea Soup: Activity Guide" (see column to left).

Among Art's other recent finds is a reasonably priced, lightweight Secchi Disk.  These simple tools are required pieces of equipment for water quality studies, or field surveys where turbidity and visibility must be measured.
The 2004 MarineLab's Leave Only Bubbles catalog will be coming off the press in March 2004.  You're sure to find something for YOUR classroom - satisfaction guaranteed!  If you don't like it, we'll take it back - no questions, no time limit, NO PROBLEM!
